Sumptuous

Rich Rich Rich By Maeve Maddox Because of my post about the utilization of the word unctuous with regards to cooking, a few perusers proposed that speakers may be mistaking unctuous for rich. On the off chance that they will be, they should not have the foggiest idea about the importance of rich. English-talking cooks who utilize unctuous to depict pork broils are alluding to taste, surface, and deliciousness. The word luxurious, albeit frequently used to depict a supper, has nothing to do with the flavor of food. The word rich gets from the Latin action word sÃ¥ «mä•re, â€Å"to take, expend, spend.† From the action word comes the Latin descriptive word sumptuosus, â€Å"costly, expensive.† At various times of history, governments passed what were called â€Å"sumptuary laws,† laws that condemned overspending by certain social classes. The articulation â€Å"born to the purple,† meaning, â€Å"born into the illustrious family,† originates from sumptuary laws that confined the utilization of a costly color called Tyrian purple. In antiquated Rome, for instance, just the ruler could wear a Tyrian purple cape cut in brilliant string. Just congresspersons were allowed to design their robes with a Tyrian purple stripe. European sumptuary laws were established all through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and even discovered their way to the New World. The Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a sumptuary law to restrain the wearing of trim, gold catches, unsettles, capes, and other costly things to residents with a total assets of 200 pounds or more. A rich supper is a costly dinner. It will have various courses comprised of a wide assortment of dishes and beverages. Here’s a depiction of a luxurious supper offered at the expense of $99,300 by a food provider to the rich and well known: The supper incorporates lavish fixings, for example, duck eggs and truffles, just as a dish of Wagyu hamburger contacted with silver leaf that’s served on a bed of dry ice. Each dish in the eight-course dinner is joined with a fine wine, for example, the $27,680 container of La Romanee-Conti, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, 1990. The sticker price likewise incorporates a harpist, an artist and pigeons, just as gourmet specialist Adam Simmonds, who earned a Michelin star in 2006.â One can presumably expect that such a costly and extravagantly created feast would incorporate solid and steady, scrumptious food, yet not really. An extravagant supper would be able to be inadequate in sense of taste satisfying food. Another peruser recommends that unctuous might be a slip-up for heavenly; an intriguing idea, as flavorful is a conversational coinage thought to be an adjusted type of lavish. At first, costly or extravagant things were portrayed as tasty, for instance, â€Å"a delectable house.† Then, luscious turned into a general term of excited recognition like wizard or crushing, for instance, â€Å"That representation of Thomas More is truly scrumptious!† Finally, on the grounds that it must have frequently been applied to food, flavorful came to mean heavenly. Another remark focuses to a potential clarification for the slanting utilization of unctuous with English-talking cooks: onctuex (ladylike, onctueuse) is utilized by French prepares to depict food that is velvety. Notwithstanding, I can’t imagine that a word meaning velvety is actually the correct one to depict a pork broil. English has enough descriptors to depict things that taste great without depending on unctuous or tasty. Here are a couple: heavenly heavenly heavenly mouth-watering scrumptious delightful toothsome tasteful delicious delectable Need to improve your English quickly a day? document.createElement('audio'); https://media.blubrry.com/admissions_straight_talk/p/www.accepted.com/hubfs/IV_with_Jessica_Chung.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | Download | EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | TuneIn | SpotifyThis week: an inside look at UCLA Anderson, with Associate Director of Admissions Jessica Chung. If you’re especially interested in careers in entrepreneurship, entertainment, or media, or you’re just interested in learning more about Anderson, this is the show for you! Jessica Chung provides an overview of Anderson’s FT MBA program (1:59) It’s practical and customizable. You can customize the sequence of your first year core classes (finance, marketing, consulting). And there are 13 specializations to choose from, so you can tailor your experience. (A specialization is not required.) The benefits of Anderson’s location in LA: good weather, outdoor activities, a diverse metropolitan environment with a lot of industries—LA has a lot to offer! Balancing a broad management education with specialization (5:15) You can take the core courses your first year and begin electives as early as the winter quarter, which can be particularly helpful to career-changers wanting to get a foundation in preparation for a critical internship in their new field. Anderson is well known for its collaborative culture. (8:05) Chung discusses what that means in real terms: how it goes beyond supportive teamwork to an encompassing attitude where classmates are truly invested in each other’s success. She gives some examples: students helping each other in class, students sharing recruiting info. There’s a friendly atmosphere on campus. Anderson may be best known for its strengths in entrepreneurship and entertainment/media related fields, but it has a lot of other strengths.  (12:41) Chung highlights the program’s strength in tech (and the development of Silicon Beach). She also highlights Anderson’s career services, which provides great mentoring to students. Chung mentions a recent exciting project launched by an Anderson grad. (16:53) Vow To Be Chic, which offers designer bridal party dresses for rental. Some advice on the application process!   GRE vs GMAT? (20:09) The adcom sees them no differently- so take whichever one you’re more comfortable with and will do better on. (They still see more GMAT scores overall.) With regard to the GMAT’s new IR section—she says they’re waiting for more data, since they’re still receiving applications from people who took the exam before that section was added. So it’s weighed less heavily right now than the verbal and quantitative sections. (Don’t blow it off, though.) Is it true that applicants who plan to go into certain fields (eg finance, consulting) should take the GMAT rather than the GRE? (22:33)   This doesn’t affect admissions—but it is true that some companies ask for GMAT scores during the recruiting process. So it makes sense for some people to take the GMAT in anticipation of that process. What happens when you hit â€Å"submit† on your UCLA Anderson application?  (23:38) First, every piece of the completed application is read, carefully, by members of the adcom. Then the committee decides whether to extend an invitation to interview. Interviews are held either on campus or by skype (they’re weighted the same). The interviewer will see your resume, but not the full application. In the interview, expect behavioral questions, questions about your experience and goals, why Anderson. After the interview, the committee reviews the interview report. Decisions are posted by the decision date. The waitlist process. (28:58) Being waitlisted is an indication that your application is strong. If you’re waitlisted Round 1, you’ll be updated each successive round. Waitlisted candidates can and should submit updates with significant accomplishments/new info. What gets her excited about an applicant, in a positive way?  (33:36) Applicants who make a real effort to put their best foot forward, and who show genuine interest and enthusiasm for Anderson. A discussion of the challenge of gender equity in faculty hiring, and how to make the b-school environment inclusive.  (37:43) Anderson recently received a $100 million gift from Marion Anderson. (42:37) A short discussion of some of the exciting areas this money could go towards, including faculty research, student programming, funding/outreach resources, and building projects. Advice for applicants: be yourself! (44:08) Don’t try to imagine what the adcom wants to read. Think about what you want the adcom to know about you, and think about what Anderson is. Speak to current students, do research. Restricting Tobacco Advertising Should tobacco advertising be restricted? This is a very controversial issue. There is the idea that young children that smoke started smoking because of advertisements, but there is also the idea that children start smoking for other reasons. Many big, well-known tobacco companies like RJ Reynolds are being sued for their advertisements. On Monday April 20th, 1998 the jury heard a testimony from Lynn Beasly, the marketing vice president of the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. English Classical and Neo-Classical Conventions

Question: Discuss about theEnglishfor Classical and Neo-Classical Conventions. Answer: Introduction The Romantic Literature is a very integral part of the English literature that has pre-dominated the literary works of every nation, such as Europe, Latin America, and the US. The Romantic period of English literature is said to have spanned from 1750 to 1870, and the each literary work written in that period is characterized by an intense note of subjectivity, imagination of approach, freedom of thought, as well as veneration of nature. The very word Romantic was first coined and used during the 18th Century in England, and the word was used to refer to anything that is romance-like, just like the fanciful characters found in the medieval romances. By the turn of the 18th Century, in Germany as well as in France, the literature produced by the writers started turning away and breaking itself free from the shackles of Classical and neo-Classical conventions. Consequently, what happened, is that the inspiration for the Romantic method hailed from two of the most eminent literary personalities, the one being the German writer Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, and the other being the French philosopher William Wordsworth. While Rousseau has been known for recognizing the sect of the individual, and for having advocated the liberty of the spirit of an individual, Goethe added to the same, and offered more well-defined guidelines, by collaborating the points in a set of essays in his book entitled, Von Deutscher Art Und Kunst (also kown as, Of German Style and Art, 1773). In these essays, the author has been seen inscribing the romantic spirit, as it is evident in any Gothic literature, English plays of Shakespeare, or even in the German folk songs. What Goethe aimed to do, is to imitate the free and untrammeled approach as exhibited by Shakespeare in his one of his popular historical drama of the 16th Century, Gotz Von Berlichingen. This play of Shakespeare, very much like any Romantic literary work, exhibited as well as defended rebellion against the political power, by launching the Storm and Stress Group, that has been a precursor of German Romanticism. Again, it is also equally important to note he re that another novel of Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther, written in the year of 1774, is also considered to be one of the very important documents of romantic literature, as the novel is known for acclaiming emotion, even to the extent of committing suicide for unreciprocated love. The book sets the mood and tone of intense emotion of melancholy, frenzy and self-destruction, that are common feature characterizing a Romantic literary work. Again, if one thinks of considering the very critically acclaimed Lyrical Ballads (1800), by Wordsworth, one will be able to trace the intense note of romanticism characterizing the literary masterpiece. Here, in this book, the poet-author confirms and re-affirms the vital role imagination, feeling and emotion plays in the process of poetic creation. Thus, it has been discovered that with the advent of Romanticism , emotion and imagination got precedence over reason and intellect, intuition was preferred over science, making the literary works of the time ring with a note of immense passion and sensibility. Further, the Romantic literature is also known for breaking away from the shackles of limits set by the classical Literature, and thus the period witnessed the production of tragic-comedies, as well as the adoption of a free style. The standards, limits and the boundaries set by the writers of previous generation was no longer acceptable. Consequently, the concept of the Three Unities, or the strict adherence to a particular genre, such as a tragedy or a comedy, while writing a drama, was also violated by the Romantics. The Romantic period witnessed a sudden love for lyricism and impulsiveness, the important features that had been known for characterizing the medieval romances and the folk poetries. As a result, in the Romantic period, one witnesses the denunciation of the strict forms or regular meters, that characterized the Classical literature. While selecting the hero, a writer in the Romantic period, was prone to choose the individualized characters, rather than the universal kinds of characters prevalent in the Classical period. The character delineation in the Romantic period, was done after Rousseaus idea of common man. The Romantic values defined and inspired the works of Goethe and Wordsworth, who wished to free the society from any kid of tyranny, oppression and convention. Not only did the Romantics revolt against the conventions prevalent in the preceding era, but the dictatorial systems that had helped to sustain the neo-classical age, were also subject to revolution. Consequently, a huge number of literary works deal with the themes of social and political movements. From the year of 1848 onwards, Europe was wracked by political turmoil, and the same found a prominent expression in the literary works of the period. Wordsworth and Goethe both as the representatives of the Romantic period, tried to resist to the foreign tyranny and oppression. For example, in The Betrothed (1825-27), a peasant couple is found to assume an active role, in crushing the feudal system of Northern Italy. P.B Shelley and Byron also wrote a huge number of works, that clearly describe their protest against the social and political wrongs of the contemporary era. One of the important features of the Romantic period, was that the writers of the age were highly discontent with the urban society, and thus the censure of the same finds an expression in their works. Both Wordsworth and Goethe claim in their works, that a city has more dignity than a fortress. Rousseau says that though people were born free, civilization set them in chains. Thus, the feeling of subjugation plays an important role here. While Goethe speaks of the dark Satanic mills in Milton, Wordsworth in his The Prelude speaks of the close and overcrowded haunts/ Of cities. The Romantic writers also expressed a deep interest in the beauty of the nature and the natural settings. In The seasons (1726-30) written by Goethe, one can see the pleasure amidst the unspoiled beauty of nature. The scenery tradition found in the works of this period, finds an expression here. The love for the simplicity of rural life, as opposed to the complexities of the urban life also manifests itself in the poems of Wordsworth, such as The Solitary Reaper or The Daffodils. Apart from the love of country life, there is also a common feeling of apprehension that the life is endangered, and such feelings find expression in poems like, Ode to Evening (1747). The Romantic writers also had a deep interest in the love as well as the depiction of the scenery of nature, and the Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent (1819-20), of Wordsworth is one such poem that describes the beauty of the Hudson River Valley. In the fortitude of their modern freedom, Wordsworth and Goethe extended their imaginary prospects chronologically and spatially. The Romantics tried to imitate the writings of the Middle Ages, the themes and the settings of which deeply moved and inspired the writers. The Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765), for example, continually refers to the beauty of the Gothic past, along with a deep sense of melancholic love for the graveyards and anything supernatural. The love for anything illogical and supernatural was a significant element that is found to present in the works of both Goethe and Wordsworth. It was toughened by disappoint of the 18th Century rationalism, while Wordsworth and Goethe were awe-struck with the idea that maybe as of the common Romantic worry with self-identity. However, the Romantic movement in the later time, led to the formation of new literary movements, such as the Symbolist movement, the Parnassian Movement. This is due to the broad cultural movements across the continent of Europe, and also began the courtly love and chivalry-exalted love, which was a way for men to almost worship the women (week 6 lecture). Romanticism is all about expressing emotios, love and feelings which may end positively and/or negatively.
